He is Professor of Design Leadership at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. He is the author of several books on design history and theory, including The Culture of Design, (3rd Revised Edition, 2014) and Economies of Design (2017). His PhD focused on design and the transitions to democracy in Spain and Hungary and he has lectured extensively in Spain and Latin America. He has also been Professor of Design Culture at the University of Brighton and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where he led several funded research projects on social design and design activism.
